Sam Singh - Mayor of East Lansing

How This Came About | Nonprofit Advocate | My Future Employer | Resume

I had the unique opportunity to be involved as an elected leader with the college town of my alma mater, Michigan State University.  The City of East Lansing is an incredible community of about 50,000 people that is an economic and educational hub for the mid Michigan area.  I came to East Lansing in 1989 as a freshman to Michigan State University and I knew early on that I wanted to make it my home.

I graduated with my Bachelor of Arts in History in 1994, and the following year I was elected to my first term on the East Lansing City Council.  I was subsequently elected to two additional four year terms to the council.

In 2005, I was elected by my peers on the council to a two year term as Mayor. I spent the term focused on three priorities; economic development, regionalization and strengthening our commitment to the environment.  I am proud to say the city was successful on all three major objectives on top of providing solid community services.

Because the positions of city council and Mayor are part time in East Lansing, I worked for the Michigan Nonprofit Association full time during my entire tenure with the city.

Though we didn’t have term limits in East Lansing, I decided after 12 years of elected service it was time for me allow the next group of leaders to take the reins.  I am looking forward to returning to East Lansing to start a consulting career after I complete this journey.  Please visit the place I call home- www.cityofeastlansing.com
